aTV Flash (black) Beta Now Available!
Today I recieved an email I have been waiting awhile for, aTV Flash (black) beta is now available! For those that don’t know, aTV Flash is a software package that can be purchased and installed on the Apple TV 2G.
aTV Flash (black) is created by a company called FireCore. Pricing has been announced as a free upgrade for current users and $19.95 (USD) for new customers. If you would like to pre-order, click here.
What’s in the beta?
- Surf the Web – Experience the web in all its glory and stream HTML5 video from many popular sites.
- Discover New Music – Find new artists you’ll love by accessing Last.fm radio stations, artist bios and slideshows.
- Plex Client – Stream media from Plex Server running on your Mac.
- Info on Demand - Keep track of current weather and news feeds on your AppleTV.
- One-click Updates - Install, remove or update plugins in a snap through the native AppleTV interface.
What’s coming soon?
- Go Beyond iTunes – Enable additional media formats such as AVI, MP4, MKV, DVD files & many more.
- Access Media Anywhere – Stream media from most NAS devices (including Airport Extreme and Time Capsule).
Much, much more…
NitoTV and other members within the community are working to create the same features but are hoping to provide the service for free. These features are not available through NitoTV yet so it is your decision whether you would like to take the plunge or not.
Let us know your thoughts! Are you going to purchase?

This could be promising. I have already installed and am enjoying Plex on my atv. Does this version add any more complexity to the mix? I would love to see all the Plex poster art and metadata on my ATV. FF and RW would also be grand!
looking at the price of the device think it means high price.
Fair call, I think everybody has different views on this. I think a lot of people would be more than happy to pay it when they begin to provide external storage and other media formats.
Thanks
Right. It’s even for one year…stupid price.
How can i downgrade from 4.2.1 to 4.1 ? I tried to bring my ATV in DFU mode and reinstall my custom firmware but it doesen´t work.
the error message is:
“2Not eligible for requested build”
Please make sure that you are using the correct firmware file, the file name should look like this:
AppleTV2,1_4.1_8M89_Custom_Restore
Let me know how you get on
What error number did you get when restoring through iTunes?
You may need to have shsh files saved for iOS 4.1 if Apple is no longer signing iOS 4.1 restores. To read up on what shsh files are, click here, to find out how to save shsh files for the future, click here (same process for the Apple TV as an iPhone)
Let me know if that helps
Thanks for your help. I think i have to wait until jailbreak for 4.2 is out. I dont know why i updated my apple tv, maybe i thought a jailbreak will be out the next day
….
if I have save ssh for my apple tv then I was on 4.1, is it any way to roll back the software update from 4.2.1 to 4.1? couldn´t find any information about it…
Yes if you have shsh files saved it is possible. Follow this tutorial I created here. I will post it on AppleTVBlogr when I get the chance.

For Mac users:

Please remember to enter DFU mode through the Pwnage Tool rather than how the video demo shows you.
Let me know how you get on.
I have 2 apple Tvs. One with the same Yann’s problem…
I bouth ATV FLASH, but unfortunaly Plex doesn’t works with SUBTITLE on Apple TV 2, right ??? On Mac, subtitle works, but to see on appletv2 don’t appear.
Is there a way to make it works?
Thanks.
Congratulations. How are you finding it? What do you think of the web browser etc?
Your right, at the moment Plex is still very much in beta, for example you are still not able to fast forward or rewind from what I understand. There is no way to fix subtitles until they release an update for Plex.
Thanks
I did jailbreak on my apple tv 2 to see movies with subtitle from my time capsule. But the only way until now is using Plex installed on a turned on Mac and see without subtitle.
At this moment I’m using just for my itunes videos…
Do you know when it will be updated?
Thanks
At the moment I have not heard any word of when an update for Plex my be available. I am guessing now that aTV Flash (black) is using it also hopefully things will speed up in terms of when an update will be released.
Follow our site for any updates when they are released
At the moment Plex is still very much a beta version. At the moment there is no way to get the subtitles working with Plex on the Apple TV. We will have to wait until an update is released to fix this.
Thanks
