Status of Jailbreak for New Apple TV [Apple TV 3]
About two weeks ago, Apple held a media event in which they announced the New iPad (AKA, in the jailbreaking community, iPad 3) and the New Apple TV. Within 24 hours of the iPad being released for sale to the general public, i0n1c was able to create an untethered jailbreak for the New iPad. That’s great news for iPad owners.
In line with the positive step’s forward for the iPad, there was some great news regarding the New Apple TV. In a teardown performed by a user in the XBMC forums, it was found that the New Apple TV sports an upgraded 512MB ram along with the single core A5 processor. For Apple TV users, this is great! Many users have been talking about the extra performance boost this will provide.
For many users, including myself, this is great news but means nothing without a jailbreak. Personally, 95% of the time I just use my Apple TV to run XBMC – and this obviously cannot be installed without a jailbreak.
With the speed multiple exploits were found for the iPad 3, you would think the same would be done for the Apple TV – this is not the case.
Over multiple tweets made yesterday, MuscleNerd explains that it looks like none of the exploits found for the New iPad will be able to used on the Apple TV. Also, because the Apple TV’s software is far smaller than that of the iPad or iPhone, there is less code for exploits to be found in.
So at this stage, there is no progress with a possible jailbreak for Apple’s shinny new device. Hopefully someone within the jailbreak community will find a possible exploit to help unlesh the power of, what has the potential to be, an incredible device.
